Aunt Hettie’s Red Okra – Slow Food Asheville’s 2020 Heritage Food Project

Join us this summer for Okra 2020!

In our ongoing efforts to promote agricultural biodiversity, this year we have chosen to grow and celebrate Aunt Hettie’s Red okra, a beautiful and delicious variety that grows well in these parts.

In a recent multi-city taste test of 70+ varieties of okra, organized by the Utopian Seed Project, Aunt Hettie’s ranked consistently among the top in flavor by a large panel of chefs, growers, and food enthusiasts. We think y’all will love it too! We want to thank the folks at the Utopian Seed Project for their deep research into okra, and for the growers they’ve collaborated with who provided us with many of the seeds we’ll be sharing this year.

We launch this project by first distributing seeds to local groups, including school and community gardens. In Asheville, Bountiful Cities and ASAP, are helping us to distribute the seeds broadly and ensure that they are reaching some of our community members facing food insecurity.

We will be providing seeds to individual home gardeners as well. If you’re a home gardener who wants to participate, you can find us at the following locations [this list will be updated with details as we secure more spots, so please check back regularly]:

— The RAD Farmers Market, Wednesdays, May 6th & 13th — 3-6

— Mars Hill Farmers and Artisans Market, Saturday, May 16th, 10-1

— If you purchase groceries from Carolina Flowers in Marshall, you can get a free seed packet with your purchase while supplies last, beginning in mid-May (TBD).

Who We Are

Slow Food Asheville is a local chapter, or “convivium,” of the international Slow Food movement. Local groups are called “convivia” because they bring together, in a convivial and enjoyable way, people who love food and traditions. Our convivium was founded in March, 2003.
