Slow Food Clemson Celebrates the Distinctive Tastes and Botanical Beauty of Heirloom Apples

November 15, 2011 by admin

FREE EVENT
Slow Food Clemson University would like to invite you to a celebration of the initial planting of 20 heirloom apple trees to the Botanical Gardens and the Clemson University Student Organic Farm. The apple tree planting ceremony is free to the public and will be held at the Clemson University Student Organic Farm on Sunday, November 20th, 2011 at 2pm.  Our honored guest will be Creighton Lee Calhoun, one of the last surviving members of the Clemson family, a notable expert on heirloom apple trees, and author of Old Southern Apples.
COCTAIL HOUR FUNDRAISER
After the planting ceremony Slow Food Clemson University will also host a cocktail hour at Sleepy Hollow Bed and Breakfast on Sunday, November 20th, 2011 at 4pm. Tickets for the event are $40, and admission includes open bar and heavy hor d’oeuvres. If you would like to purchase tickets to the cocktail hour, please visit our website: http://www.slowfoodcu.com/. The cocktail hour will highlight the flavors of various varieties of apples and include local ingredients from Upstate producers. During the cocktail hour, a silent auction of apple inspired art will take place starting at 4pm.
Slow Food Clemson University is a student organization that strives to work toward building a sustainable campus. Our mission is to inspire change across Clemson University and the community especially where Slow Food’s motto of good, clean, fair food has not been heard.
This program is funded in part by Slow Food Upstate with funds received from donors to the grants program and from fund raising efforts by Slow Food Upstate.
If you would like more information about Slow Food Clemson University’s heirloom apple project or to schedule an interview with SFCU members, please e-mail Mary Carney at sfoc@clemson.edu.
